Benefits of the Biorock Sustainable Sewage Treatment Plant

  • No Electricity Required The Biorock doesn’t need any electricity at all for the process.  It relies on gravity and natural air flow to work.  This saves several hundred pounds/year even on small single house sewage plants.  For larger sewage systems, (Holiday parks, caravan parks, office, pub, etc.) the saving are vast, e.g. for a 55 person unit, they can be around £2000/year

  • Long Desludge Interval - The Biorock pre-filter tank only requires a desludge about every 3 to 4 years.  As a result it will save a huge amount of money on the running cost

  • No Spare Parts Required - compare this to Klargester prices.

  • No Moving Parts - No machinery through out the entire sewage treatment system.

  • Can accept Sanitary Items - tampons, panty liners, wet-wipes, cotton bubs, etc. due to the fact that the system includes a settlement tank which acts as a trash tank, keeping them out of the sewage plant.

  • Minimum Visual Impact - Small lid, flush with the ground.  No compressor, so no kiosk

  • Solar Power Option - Where a pumped outlet is required, the Biorock can use SOLAR POWER not mains electricity!

  • Low Carbon Footprint - Due to fact that no electricity required for the process, the CO2 emissions relating to the production of the electricity are not present.  Likewise the infrequent desludge period reduces the CO2 emissions caused by the tankers that empty all Sewage Treatment Plants.

  • Superb Effluent Quality - This system will produce effluent to a 4:3:3 effluent standard.  The UK minimum standard (Royal Commission Standard) is a 20:30:20 standard; this is what 90% of package units will achieve.  The effluent from the Biorock is six times cleaner than the Royal Commission Standard.

  • Completely Silent - Completely silent operation as there are no electric pumps, motors or compressors..

  • Lowest Running Costs - This is the cheapest system in the UK to run - NO electricity, 3 - 4 year emptying and minimum annual maintenance.

  • 24 Hour Start Up Period - For most Sewage Treatment Units wastewater must be flowing through them for about three months before the bacteria establish themselves and the plant is working properly.  The Biorock natural fibre material is pre-seeded with these bacteria and has a start up period of only 24 hours. This has enormous benefits for systems that will experience periodic or seasonal use as nearly all conventional systems will fail to meet their discharge consent standards for several weeks or months when occupation resumes.  The Biorock will be fully functioning in 24 hours and remain functioning, even after 7 months without use.

  • EN 12566-3:2005 certified.  A few UK sewage treatment plants have this certification.  Only manufacturers with this certification are now legally able to sell treatment plants in the UK and Europe, though many manufacturers are continuing to sell illegally.

  • EN 12566-7:2006 tested.  No UK plants have this.

  • Minimum Annual Maintenance - The maintenance on a Biorock is lower than any other plant.

  • Sustainability - Without question it is the most sustainable sewage treatment system available and ideal for sustainable development.

To find out how the carbon footprint of rival sewage plants, ask the manufacturers how manyBIOROCK sewage units at our depot watts of power they use per hour, multiply by 24, then multiply by 365 which gives you the KWhours/year.  Follow this link to the carbon calculator and type the KWhours/year in the kWh mains electricity (using average emissions factor) box.  The tonnes of CO2 calculates in the box.

BIOROCK Can be used as a Septic Tank Conversion Unit

The BIOROCK® package sewage treatment systems are developed to purify (domestic) wastewater from households, farms, holiday homes, offices, leisure centers, public or commercial facilities without any power consumption whatsoever.

The savings on these larger sewage  plants is VAST.

A typical 90 person sewage plant will cost:-

Electricity  £2300/year

Emptying  £2000/year

The BIOROCK®  90 person plant costs:-

Electricity  £0/year

Emptying  £500/year

BIOROCK® package systems are biological wastewater treatment units. The treatment philosophy enhances the principles of a combination of pre-separation and an aerobic biological filtration. As a result, the treated effluents from BIOROCK® package systems can either be discharged to natural outfalls, rivers, lakes, infiltrated or reused for irrigation or gardening needs. The treated effluents will meet the highest regulations and norms of discharge effluent quality and water reuse.

The BIOROCK® purification principle is unique in comparison to all traditional techniques. It is electricity free. The BIOROCK® sewage system copies the way nature treats waste material.  The media, a processed natural stone fibre material enables the units to perform under highly variable influent loading conditions (weekend houses, holiday cottages, camping sites, etc.)  The plants are powered by natural air currents - and solar ( if a pumped outlet is required) alone.

How does the  BIOROCK® Sewage Treatment Plant Work

The BIOROCK sewage treatment system is designed to discharge direct to a watercourse.

The raw sewage first enters a Settlement tank (supplied by Waste Tech or you can use an existing 1 or 2 chamber traditional septic tank - NOT an onion shaped one) which separates the solids from the liquid part of the effluent.  This tank digests most of the solids anaerobically and only requires emptying every 3 to 4 years.

The Primary Effluent then enters the BIOROCK Biofilter plant which uses layers of natural fibre material in contact with air to treat the effluent in exactly the sameInside the BIOROCK Sewage Treatment Plant way as Nature treats effluent in the soil or on the margins of a pond.  Just as the soil filters effluent so efficiently, without electricity, so does the BIOROCK.

The suspended solids are trapped in the natural stone fibre matrix in the first and second filter stages.  Bacteria grow within the matrix and digest the organic material.  The purified clean water  trickles through to the bottom where it exits the sewage plant - SIMPLE.

Instead of using electricity-guzzling compressors to provide the air, the BIOROCK biofilter sewage treatment plant utilises the wind and natural 'chimney-draft' to pull the air through the plant with no electricity required.

The natural fibre works with nature, not against it and is self-cleaning.

The low cost settlement tank is included in the sewage treatment package price if required.

Plant sizes are 6, 12 and 18 persons.  Larger plants are modular in design.

The final effluent is the cleanest ever recorded by the EN 12566-3 testing facility in Germany and the plant produces a 4:3:3 standard of effluent.   Accepted in FRANCE.

WTE is proud to announce that the BIOROCK sewage treatment system has just been chosen for the exclusive 'GREEN' holiday village resort of El Pueblo, on the Carribean Island of Bonaire.
