Klargester septic tanksAbout Klargester Alpha Septic TanksFor small domestic sites without mains drainage, septic tanks may, in some circumstances ( where soil conditions are particularly favourable as
regards percolation ) be allowed for very basic sewage treatment. An adequate and properly designed effluent disposal system soakaway is essential and even then, septic tank soakaways tend to be very problematic, particularly in wet weather.
Septic tank effluent is NOT allowed to enter a watercourse, even if by accident as it is a very polluting substance.
Klargester septic tanks are very useful when used as TRASH TANKS in front of sewage treatment tanks, to intercept items which should not go down the drains. See septic tank problems.
How they workKlargester septic tanks simply seperate the liquids from the solids which are periodically taken away by tanker, at least once per year.
The solids are discharged to the bottom of the tank and the 'skirt' keeps them there. The baffles in the skirt allow the liquid to rise up into the upper zone where they exit through the outlet.
Septic tanks give only a rudimentary separation of the sewage contents and 70% of the polluting matter is left in the effluent. This eventually blocks the soakaway. Even the Klargester website states 'SEPTIC TANKS BITE!'
Model SelectionThe Klargester Septic Tank comes in three sizes and is suitable for individual domestic dwellings up to a large family house.
Soakaway designTo establish the overall length of a drain run required a percolation testis required. DO NOT allow anyone to install a soakaway without first doing the percolation tests and designing the system!
A closed loop system of rigid perforated drains as shown should be laid in trenches on top of 300mm. of 20mm. to 50mm. size gravel.
Coiled plastic drainage pipe is not allowed.
To ensure even distribution it is important for the land drains to have a uniform gradient of no more than 1 in 200.
SitingThe following rules apply when siting the tank and dispersal system.
The site should preferably be a minimum of 15 metres from the nearest habitable dwelling.
The soakaway must be a minimum of 10 metres from the nearest water course and at least 1 metre above the highest local winter water table and bedrock. A 2 metre deep trial hole should be dug to determine the above before any design is approved. Emptying vehicles should have access to within 30 metres of the tank. Soakaways must not be constructed under buildings, driveways, paths, etc.. InstallationIn all cases the Klargester tank should be seated on a firm concrete base and the tank should be backfilled with concrete, fill with water at the same time to avoid flotation. |
