Changes in the Consent to Discharge regulations (January 25, 2009)
As of 22nd January 2009 The Environment Agency no longer requires Consent for discharges of sewage from a small sewage treatment plant or septic tank into a soakaway or drainage field, provided that:

  •  it is not in the inner Groundwater Source Protection Zone.
  •  it has a volume of less than 2m3 per day.
  •  the installation was designed and built to the standards applicable when it was installed.
  • it is properly maintained.

They do require Consent for discharges of sewage from small sewage treatment plants to inland surface watercourses and to tidal waters.

To find out if your property is in a Groundwater Source Protection Zone they have maps available on their website in the What’s in Your Back Yard Section.  The link is below.  Select drinking water and either put your post code or place name in the box on the top left hand side.  It may appear as nothing has happened but if you use the + button on the map it will zoom in on the location you have entered.  If your postcode is in any of the groundwater protection zone categories, you will require a Consent to Discharge.
