Domestic Sewage Treatment Plants For UK Homes

Sewage treatment plant installed for a domestic house

Sewage treatment plants are the best solution if your property is not connected to a foul sewer (mains drainage).  They are a tank in the ground that receives sewage and wastewater from the house and process it so that it is “cleaned”.  This cleaned water (known as effluent) is then discharged.

Sewage treatment plants are primarily, and in many cases exclusively, designed for domestic family homes with a constant population. Not large houses where wastewater treatment systems are under loaded. These are, typically, larger 4+ bedroom houses, with only 2 people living in them.

Almost all sewage treatment plants are only designed to go down to 50% of the size of the plant, meaning that a 6-person plant, needed for a 4-bedroom home, must be used by a minimum of 3 people. This is in order for the bacteria to receive enough 'food' from the sewage per day. They are only tested down to 50% for their EN Certificate, so there is no data available for them for lower percentages, and in many cases, they don't work.

A domestic sewage treatment plant that is connected to a normal house, lived in by enough full-time residents who are responsible for the plant, is the ideal situation for any sewage treatment system. It has a stable flow rate of sewage into the plant and the concentration of pollutants is relatively stable as well.

Our Domestic Sewage Treatment Plant Range

We manufacture different types of domestic sewage treatment plants and each one has its own benefits.

Each of our different domestic sewage treatment plants have been designed to suit different needs and lifestyles. Find out about which home sewage treatment plant best suits you below:

VORTEX

VORTEX is our best selling sewage treatment plant.

It has three main advantages:

  • It is 100% aerobic so it is odourless.

  • It doesn’t use electricity all the time.

  • It has been designed to resolve the common under loading problem that a lot of domestic sewage treatment plants often face when installed in smaller properties. VORTEX’s level of performance can be easily adjusted by hand. This allows it to work even if only one person lives in the house.

The VORTEX domestic sewage treatment page has been EN Tested down to as little as 10% capacity, with no reduction in the performance, when turned down to the correct level. This low-capacity performance makes it ideal for normal residential use, where the family only leaves the house unoccupied during holiday periods and not for months at a time.

QUANTUM

QUANTUM is the UK’s most compact and lowest priced sewage treatment plant.

Our QUANTUM domestic sewage treatment plant is the economy version of our groundbreaking VORTEX system. The QUANTUM also can have its level of performance adjusted by hand and will work with properties with only a single occupier.

This domestic sewage treatment plant also has been EN Tested down to 10% of its design load, meaning that it can avoid the common issues that normal sewage treatment plants encounter at low capacity levels. The QUANTUM has been designed for normal residential use, and is a great choice for those who might only have 1–2 people at home on a regular basis.

CYCLONE

Not all houses are lived in on a permanent basis, such as holiday homes, second homes, or sporadic letting properties. While a VORTEX may still be the answer, depending on the circumstances, you might be better off choosing a domestic sewage treatment plant that has been designed to be inactive for longer periods of time.

CYCLONE sewage treatment system or a non-electric FilterPod treatment plant may be a better choice, if the flow rates are sporadic over a long period of time, or if the absences are longer than 2 to 3 weeks at a time. Even with large, sporadic gaps in use, CYCLONE can still maintain high levels of performance without encountering any issues. However, CYCLONE does need full occupancy with higher numbers of people when it is in use though, to 'Stock-up' the larder, so to speak!

FilterPod non-electric sewage treatment plant

FilterPod

FilterPod, is a sewage treatment system that is designed and made by ourselves in the UK.

It uses zero electricity for the sewage treatment process, saving you up to £300/year when compared to other powered domestic treatment plants that are sold in the UK. As the FilterPod doesn’t use electrical components, it is completely silent in operation, making it perfect for people who spend a lot of their time outside around their home.

It is also ideal for weekend cottages, sporadic letting or 2nd homes, as it can not only cope with sporadic use, but also with very little occupation when it is in use. Another area where FilterPod excels is for off-grid homes and eco developments.

Domestic Sewage Treatment Plant FAQs

Here are some answers to some of the most common questions we get asked.

Yes (usually).

If you have a property that is not connected to the mains sewer, you will need to install a wastewater management solution, like a domestic sewage treatment plant. Installing a sewage treatment plant does officially require planning permission.

Planning permission is always granted by the local authority because the building needs it.  Some local authorities do not require planning permission because they know they will say yes.

Yes. The installation of sewage treatment plants is covered by Section H2 of Building Regulations and Building Control sign off is required. Unfortunately, many building control officers (BCOs) are unfamiliar with the regulations and permit non compliant work/installation to be undertaken.

Please contact us if you have any questions/doubts.

Domestic sewage treatment plants do need emptying, as while they clean wastewater and produce a clear effluent, they do create “sludge” during this process which builds up within the sewage treatment plant. This build up of sludge will need periodic emptying. The time frame for this will depend on:

  • The number of residents.

  • The size of the treatment system.

  • Diet.

  • Cleaning chemicals.

  • Servicing.

  • Medication.

It is recommended that your domestic sewage treatment plant is installed by professionals who are qualified and experienced in these installations. Incorrectly installing your system can cause costly errors or even potential fines, many of which can add up to more than the original cost of the treatment plant.

However, our sewage treatment plants are extremely robust and simple in operation, making them very suitable for self installation if you have the groundworks skills.
